Historically important buildings are protected from demolition and alterations by the Listed Buildings scheme. This scheme is important to historians everywhere because it can highlight how buildings were constructed, and how people lived in times gone by.
There are many of these protected buildings in Leicestershire, so I believe this article will prove an interesting article for amateur and professional local historians alike.
Listed buildings are split up into three sections known as grades. These are listed below:
Grade I | These are the "cream" of historic buildings, and are of particular historic importance. |
Grade
II* (Grade Two Star) |
These are the "next" to best buildings. They are of good quality, but are perhaps not as important as Grade I buildings. |
Grade II | These are the buildings which are historically interesting, but not important and may have been significantly altered. These do not have the same protection as grades I and II*. |
The listing of buildings is determined by the Department of National Heritage under the advice of English Heritage.
Currently, we only have information on listed buildings in the city and surrounding area. We have attempted to split them up into useful sections for you to research. We apologise for any mistakes made. Please note that these are still under construction and are being added to all the time.
